Mentors - Do You Need One or Not?

The modern use of the word Mentors is as a trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person (source: Wikipedia). Going strictly by that definition, the question becomes how could you afford not to have a one?

Some professions have "programs" in which newcomers are paired with more experienced people in order to obtain good examples and advice as they advance, and schools sometimes have mentoring programs for new students or students who are having difficulties.

Today mentors provide their expertise to less experienced individuals in order to help them advance their careers, enhance their education, and build their networks. Many of the world's most successful people have benefited from having one, including business people, politicians, actors and athletes.

Real Estate is no different. When I first started out in Real Estate, I was fortunate enough to work under the tutelage of one of the most seasoned real estate agents and investors in the city I lived in. In a short three year period of time I was one of his top selling agents for every year I was there. I no longer sell real estate, but I truly believe that had I not met him I would have never gone into real estate investing, nor would I be any good at it.

Ironically, he learned everything he knew from someone else who coached him in his early days. To be honest, in every career I've had (I've had a couple), I've always had someone who has set an example for me to follow, taken time out of their busy schedule to teach and guide me, and inspired me through their actions.

There are many mentoring programs available to Real Estate Investors. You can click on the banner below to learn about the one I am personally involved with.

In the meantime, if you want to find one, you can always go to a local real estate investment club meeting. There is always one in every area. Not only are these very informative and put you in touch with contacts you may not otherwise have access to, but you may develop a very beneficial relationship with someone who is quite willing to let you pick their brain over lunch, or shadow them for a short period of time, or possibly let you work for them if you're willing to do so for free. This is done quite often actually.

Another good place to find good examples are to call the "I Buy Houses" ads in the newspaper and see if they need a free assistant in return for an education on your part. You never know unless you ask.

People as a general rule of thumb like to help other people, love to talk about themselves, and if they see a certain something in you, have no problem extending a helping hand.
